Malika Pukhraj was born in village Mirpur16 miles from Jammu and 55 miles from Akhnoor - over looking Jammu River. She was Malika with the blessings of a "Majzoob" Baba Moti Ram and named Pukhraj by her Aunt. Her father neglected family affairs but mother insisted to get her educated. They shifted to Jammu Town where she learnt Urdu and Persian from a distant uncle Gulzar Hussain Shah. She also read Fasana-e-Azad and Ratan Nath Sarshar. She had melodious voice from childhood. She received music lessons in a Delhi sojourn from very strict Ustads. – arduous "Nirith Bhav". One of her teacher has been quoted as Ustad Mubarik Ali Khan. Father of Bare Ghulam Ali Khan Sahib also nurtured her. At the age of 9 appointed at the Darbar of Maharaja Hari Singh of Kashmir. She remained there for nine years - performed at the coronation ceremony of the Maharaja. Maharaja was also an amateur singer. Almost all singers of repute in India have had book-length biographies written on them. Several instrumentalists have also been the subject of books, their lives often meticulously detailed and the resultant texts becoming invaluable records for aficionados of music, who want to know the histories and life stories of their icons.
However, the practice is, to a very large extent, alien to Pakistan. A few of our music legends, such as Mehdi Hasan and Ghulam Ali, were lucky to have had books written on them (Mere Mehdi Hasan [My Mehdi Hasan] by Akhilesh Jha; Ghazal Wizard Ghulam Ali: The Life, Times and Experiences of a Living Legend by Sadhana J. and Bhavesh Sheth) although these were published in India. Journalist Khalid Hasan had written a long piece on Malika-i-Tarrannum Madam Noor Jehan but, despite the singer’s desire for a proper biographical book, that was it.

ISLAMABAD - The 21st death anniversary of famous Pakistani singer Malika Pukhraj was observed on Tuesday. She was born in 1910 at Hamirpur Sudhar near Akhnoor Jammu, Her original name was Hamida. Her family moved to Pakistan after the partition. Malika Pukhraj had complete mastery over raags. She also had a great attachment to Urdu and Persian poetry and literature. Malika Pukhraj sang Hafeez Jalandhri’s famous song ‘Abhi To Main Jawan Hoon’ Adam ki ghazal ‘woh Baatain Teri, woh Fasane Tere’ in a unique manner that came to be considered as her identity. Malika Pukhraj’s husband Syed Shabir Hussain Shah was a highly educated government officer and author of the famous Urdu novel ‘Jhok Sial’. Pakistan’s famous singer Tahira Syed is their daughter. The Government of Pakistan awarded Malika Pukhraj with the Presidential Medal for acknowledging her performance. Her biography was published as ‘Song Sung True’ which was translated from Urdu to English by Salim Qadwai.
