Naval Base Coronado welcomed a new executive officer on Friday—Capt. Greg McWherter. He joins Commanding Officer Captain Christopher E. Sund and Command Master Chief CMDCM (SW/AW) Steven F. Alt.

Captain Greg McWherter is a native of Atlanta, GA and graduate of Avondale HS, where he lettered in football and soccer. He attended The Citadel, where he played NCAA Division 1 soccer for the Bulldogs, graduated Cum Laude with a BS in Civil Engineering, and received a commission through NROTC in 1990. He entered aviation training at Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola in June 1990 and flew the T-34C Mentor at nearby NAS Whiting Field, before moving to NAS Meridian, MS, to fly the T-2C Buckeye and TA-4J Skyhawk. CAPT McWherter earned his Wings of Gold in September 1992.

Navy Captain Ignored Lewd Conduct in Blue Angels
The U.S. Navy has found the former commander of the Blue Angels guilty on charges such as conduct unbecoming an officer by condoning a climate of sexual harassment, and lewd behavior in the prestigious flight demonstration squadron, according to a U.S. Pacific Fleet investigation.
The investigation concluded that Capt. Gregory McWherter "witnessed, condoned, and encouraged behavior that, while juvenile and sophomoric in the beginning, ultimately and in the aggregate, became destructive, toxic, and hostile," a June 3 Navy press release stated.
McWherter was given non-judicial punishment in the form of a punitive letter of reprimand for failure to obey an order or regulation and conduct unbecoming of an officer "by fostering a hostile command climate, failing to stop obvious and repeated instances of sexual harassment, condoning widespread lewd practices within the squadron, and engaging in inappropriate and unprofessional discussions with his junior officers."

Blue Angels' ex-chief accused of misconduct
WASHINGTON — The Navy has reassigned a former commander of the Blue Angels, its acrobatic fighter squadron, and is investigating allegations that the elite team of pilots was a hotbed of hazing, sexual harassment and other forms of discrimination, documents show.
The Navy announced on Friday that it had relieved Capt. Gregory McWherter, a two-time commander of the Blue Angels, of duty for alleged misconduct. At the time, the Navy did not describe the nature of the accusations or provide other details.
But an internal military document that a Navy official inadvertently emailed to a Washington Post editor states that a former member of the Blue Angels filed a complaint last month accusing McWherter of promoting a hostile work environment and tolerating sexual harassment. The complaint described an atmosphere rife with sexually explicit speech, the open display of pornography and jokes about sexual orientation.
