In doing so, Surendran had to coordinate with a team of around 250 people and 90 project managers and heads. But he humbly says, “My previous directors and the entire team have paved the way for the success of this mission.”

Surendran was born in Tuticorin, one among four siblings, the first-generation graduates in his family. “My father P Nagarajan was an accountant in a private establishment, and ensured that all his children are well-educated irrespective of the then financial difficulties,” he says.
Studying in a Tamil medium school till Grade 10, he was the topper winning a gold medal in the board exams at St Xavier’s Higher Secondary School, Tuticorin. Prof. N. Surendran was a straightforward and humble person with a tough exterior but extremely good at heart.
He was born and brought up in Kayamkulam where he had his basic education. He was an alumnus of Medical college, Tvpm. Obtaining his MBBS degree in 1966 he started his teaching career three years later. He passed his MS General surgery in 1974 and MCh Pediatric surgery in 1977. He worked in various medical colleges of kerala but majority of his service was in his alma mater. He is credited with starting a full fledged dept of pediatric surgery at medical college, Alappuzha during his stint there. He had also served as the deputy supdt of SAT hospital, Tvpm. He also had a spell abroad. While being professor at tvpm he guided many young pediatric surgeons in the early phase of their career. After retirement in 1997 and his overseas innings he settled down in Kollam and worked as Consultant pediatric surgeon in Sankar Shashtiabdapurthy memorial hospital.
