The panel presents a severe portrait of a middle-aged man with a lined face and bright eyes, dressed in sombre Venetian black with a spherical black cap known as a calottina; the black costume suggests he is a member of the patriciate. The name of the person portrayed is indicated along the top of the painting in gold letters: ‘LVCIO CRASSO PHILOSOPHO’. Although inscribed at some time after the portrait was finished, the identity of the sitter has always been accepted as the philosopher Lucio (Alvise) Crasso. Little is known about Crasso who does not merit an entry in the Dizionario biografico degli Italiani [biographical dictionary of the Italians]. Various inventories refer to another, later portrait of the same philosopher by Giorgione or Titian.[1]

Lazzaro Bastiani (1429 – 5 April 1512) was an Italian painter of the Renaissance, active mainly in Venice.
He was born in Padua. He is first recorded as a painter in Venice by 1460 in a payment for an altarpiece of San Samuele, for the Procuratori di San Marco. In 1462 he was paid at the same rate as Giovanni Bellini. In 1470, he was a member of the Scuola di San Girolamo in Venice. In the 1480s he worked with Gentile Bellini for the Scuola Grande di San Marco. He painted a Coronation of the Virgin (Gallerie dell'Accademia); a Nativity (1477); and a St. Anthony on the Nut Tree.
In 1508 he was called upon, with his pupil Vittore Carpaccio, to estimate paintings of Giorgione for the Fondaco dei Tedeschi.

Lazzaro Bastiani (1429 – 5 Abril 1512) foi um pintor italiano da Renascença, ativo principalmente em Veneza.
Ele nasceu em Pádua. Seu primeiro registro como pintor em Veneza é de 1460, em um pagamento por um retábulo de San Samuele, para os Procuradores de San Marco. Em 1462, suas obras eram tão valiosas quanto às de Giovanni Bellini. Em 1470, ele era membro da Scuola di San Girolamo em Veneza.
