A Tale of Three Careers: The Remarkable Bob Hastings

Longevity is perhaps the toughest commodity to come by in show business. Just think about it: think of the television stars of your youth and then ask yourself when you last saw them in anything. So when someone is able to stay in the limelight for twenty years or so, that’s an accomplishment. Now, take that twenty years and quadruple it. That’s the career of the late, great Bob Hastings, who was a genuine luminary on radio, television, and in the voiceover booth for nine decades.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1925, Bob Hastings got started early; by his eleventh birthday he was a boy singer on radio shows such as Doug Gray’s Singing Gang and Coast to Coast on a Bus, and then a regular on The Adventures of the Sea Hound. By the time he hit adulthood, Hastings was ticketed for radio stardom. Bob Hastings got his show business start in radio after WWII as the voice of "Archie Andrews" in the show of the same name (a spin-off of the Archie Comics series) on the Mutual Broadcasting System. The good-looking Hastings made the transition to television smoothly in 1949 in early galactic-action series like Captain Video and His Video Rangers (1949) and Atom Squad (1953). His first semi-recurring role was as either a sergeant or a lieutenant on The Phil Silvers Show (1955) (aka "Sgt. Bilko"). Overall, he appeared in eight episodes but interestingly always with a different character name though basically the same demeanor.

Most of his career has been spent in television, and he's notable for roles such as Captain Binghamton's yes-man "Lieutenant Elroy Carpenter" on McHale's Navy (1962), one of the two Tommy Kelsey's on All in the Family (1971), and "Captain Ramsey" on General Hospital (1963). Robert Francis Hastings (April 18, 1925 – June 30, 2014)[1] was an American actor.[2] He was best known for his portrayal of Lt. Elroy Carpenter on McHale's Navy and voicing Commissioner James Gordon in the DC Animated Universe.[3] Bob Hastings was also in episode season 1 Adam-12 episode 13- log 122: Christmas- the yellow dump truck.
