Elhelyezkedése

Bärnbach a tartomány középső részén fekszik a Nyugat-Stájerország régióban, Graztól nyugatra, a Kainach (a Mura mellékfolyója) mentén. Az önkormányzathoz 3 katasztrális községben (Bärnbach, Hochtregist, Piberegg.) 4 település tartozik: Bärnbach (4231 lakos), Hochtregist (1111), Piberegg (176) és Piberegg Rollsiedlung (179).

A környező önkormányzatok: északra Kainach bei Voitsberg, keletre Geistthal-Södingberg, délkeletre Stallhofen és Voitsberg, délre Rosental an der Kainach, nyugatra Köflach.

A régészek az 539 m magas Heiligen Bergen ("Szent hegy", a rajta álló barokk zarándoktemplom után) őskori településeket tártak fel. A települést sánc védte és a domb oldalban számos terasz megmaradt. Az urnamezős kultúrához köthető lakosok házai fából készültek és részben bemélyítették őket a sziklás talajba. A cserépedények nagy száma miatt a települést tréfásan "fazekasfalunak" nevezték el. On the initiative of Monsignore Friedrich Zeck, Hundertwasser volunteered to redesign the Church of St. Barbara in Bärnbach (without honorarium or reimbursement). His condition for doing so - that the surroundings of the church belonging to the city be integrated in the planning - was accepted by the city council under Mayor Konrad Bergmann. With the design of twelve arch gateways representing all the major religions in the world, Hundertwasser made a gesture to ecumenism, tolerance and community. With the redesign of the church and in cooperation with the architect Manfred Fuchsbichler, Hundertwasser created a remarkable landmark in the midst of an industrial area. On the initiative of Father Friedrich Zeck, Hundertwasser accepted the task of redesigning the Church of St. Barbara in Bärnbach. His condition for doing so - that the surroundings of the church be included in the planning, was agreed to by the community thanks to the efforts of Mayor Konrad Bergmann.

With the design of twelve gates standing for all the great religions in the world, Hundertwasser made a gesture of ecumenism, tolerance and togetherness.

With his church design and in outstanding co-operation with the architect Manfred Fuchsbichler, Hundertwasser has created a remarkable landmark in the midst of an industrial area. For the design of the interior, artists from the region were given commissions.

Hundertwasser only designed the aureole behind the altar, the floor of the presbyterium and the spiral of the window behind the baptismal font. Hundertwasser assisted the congregation in raising the funds for the project.
