OCALA, Fla. -- Here in the heart of horse country, a world away from the bustle and building drama of Saturday's Belmont Stakes on Long Island, a majestic chestnut thoroughbred named Yankee Boss peered over the front of his stall, as if taking in the vast pastoral expanse of Kinsman Farm.
Only a few feet away, Jessica Steinbrenner looked at the promising 2-year-old and smiled. The colt she named in memory of her famous father looks to have a bright future in the family business. The operation has produced big-name contenders such as Grade 1 winner Bellamy Road, although no candidates appeared in this year's Triple Crown field. But Yankee Boss may one day engage in the same relentless pursuit of winning and excellence that defined the real Boss, the late George M. Steinbrenner.

Dr. Jessica Steinbrenner is an Associate Professor in the Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences, Department of Health Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has been working with children on the autism spectrum for over two decades both as a speech-language pathologist and as a researcher. Her research interests have largely focused on school-based interventions and individuals on the spectrum with significant communication needs. She has worked with students and the educators who serve them in preschool, elementary school, middle school, and high school settings. Many of Dr. Steinbrenner's studies incorporate professional development (training and coaching) to support school-based professionals in implementing evidence-based practices. She is also interested in observational measurement, and has worked to adapt and use observational coding systems for social-communication, engagement, and fidelity of implementation across several research projects.

Jessica Steinbrenner, PhD, CCC-SLP, is an advanced research scientist at the UNC Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute. She is also an assistant professor in the Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences and the School of Education, and is a certified speech-language pathologist. Her research interests are in the area of autism spectrum disorder with a focus on school-based interventions and individuals on the spectrum with significant communication needs. She is also interested in observational measurement, and has worked to adapt and use observational coding systems for social-communication and engagement.
Steinbrenner is currently PI on Making Professional Development Work for Preschool Classroom Teams Serving Students with ASD, a development and innovation grant through the Institute of Education Sciences (IES), and site PI on the Validation of an Outcome Measure for Early Social Communication for Children with ASD through NIH.
