Datu Patinggi Abang Ali bin Abang Amir[1] (or commonly known as Datu Patinggi Ali[2]) was a key figure in the Sarawak Malays' resistance against the Brunei Empire, which occurred throughout Pengiran Indera Mahkota and Raja Muda Hashim's reign in the 1830s. He became one of the first supporters of the Brooke Raj and was hailed as Sarawaks first national hero.[2] He played an important role in the 1830s uprising against Bruneian authority.[3] In an endeavor to oppose Brunei's attempts to subjugate Sarawak through local leaders, he was described by contemporaries as a determined and courageous leader. Datu* Ali was the last, and most formidable Moro chieftain to oppose American rule
on the island of Mindanao. For nearly two years, operations against Ali were carried out by
several formations of the US Army and the Philippine Constabulary.
* The word "Datu" was used to describe leading members of Moro royalty. The Sultan was
the highest authority in Moro society, followed by the Datu's. Depending upon what level
of prestige an individual Datu occupied, the word could be translated to mean prince,
duke, count or baron. Period spellings of the title included "Datuk", "Dato" and "Datto".

Datu Ali (died 1905) was the Rajahmuda of Tinungkup (alternatively spelled as Tinukop) within the Sultanate of Buayan before succeeding his cousin, Datu Uto, as Rajah of Buayan formally from Uto's death in 1902 until his death in 1905. He was the cousin of Datu Uto of Buayan and brother of Datu Djimbangan and Sultan Tambilawan of Kudarangan, and as a rising leader, Datu Ali overpowered his brothers to rule over Kudarangan.[1][2][3]
