The acclaimed songwriter, entertainer, and actor Paul Anka was only 16 when he emerged in 1957 from Ottawa, Canada, onto the international music market. His plaintive song "Diana" unleashed an imaginative new musical style into the pop mainstream and would go on to sell 20 million copies worldwide.

At a time when Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis and Motown groups dominated the rock n’ roll scene, Anka was giving a romantic voice to teenage concerns. His best-known titles of that early era included hits like “Put Your Head On My Shoulder,” “You Are My Destiny," "Lonely Boy" and "Puppy Love," which helped kick off Donny Osmond's career. By age 18, he had five Top 5 hits to his credit.

By the early sixties, Anka had become well established as a major new performing star and prolific songwriter. He was a frequent guest on Dick Clark's American Bandstand, through which he continued to expand his fan base. In

Paul Albert AnkaOC (born July 30, 1941) is a Canadian and American singer, songwriter and actor. His songs including "Diana", “You Are My Destiny", “Lonely Boy", "Put Your Head on My Shoulder", and "(You're) Having My Baby".

Anka also wrote the theme for The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson; one of Tom Jones' biggest hits, "She's a Lady"; and the English lyrics to Claude François and Jacques Revaux's music for Frank Sinatra's signature song "My Way", which has been recorded by many, including Elvis Presley. He co-wrote three songs with Michael Jackson: "This Is It" (originally titled "I Never Heard")[1] "Love Never Felt So Good", and "Don't Matter to Me", which became posthumous hits for Jackson in 2009, 2014, and 2018, respectively.

Personal life

Anka was born in Ottawa, Ontario to Camelia and Andrew Emile "Andy" Anka, Sr. They owned a restaurant named the Locanda.[3] His parents were both Antiochian Orthodox Christians in Syria.[4] Anka's mother was Canadian-Lebanese "from a small town of, in Syria " and Anka's father was Syrian.[5]

Anka grew up singing in the St. Elias Antiochian Orthodox Church choir. He went to Fisher Park High School where he was part of a vocal trio called the Bobby Soxers.[6][7]

He became an American citizen in 1990. He is married to Polish-born Anna Anka.
