About
Paul Becker is a painter and writer working with a wide variety of influences across literature, performance, film, history and art history. Becker’s most recent work is concerned with the uses of fictional narrative as a way of re-investigating and re-mediating history.
Specifically, Becker has been exploring the potential of impostures, invented narratives and faux historical figures to act as research tools, allowing him to travel back in time and cast new light on the unfamiliar, bringing real historical incidents and personalities out of the shadows. Verisimilitude (or the quality of appearing to be true) is a vital component of Becker’s work, employed to create a suspension of disbelief that in turn allows the works to have a life of their own.
