This online exhibit features Dr. Daniel G. Hill III, who was born in Independence, Missouri in 1923, left his country to commence graduate studies at the University of Toronto in 1950, and thereafter made Canada his home.
Daniel Hill became a prominent public figure in Canada. He was a lecturer at the University of Toronto, the first Director and later the Chair of the Ontario Human Rights Commission, a prominent writer and community activist with a sustained interest in the history of Blacks in Canada, a business person who created Canada’s first human rights consulting firm, and in the last five years of his working life, he served as Ombudsman of Ontario.
With his wife Donna Bender Hill, Daniel Hill raised three children - Dan, Lawrence and Karen - who went on to become involved in the arts in Canada. He died in 2003.

Cornish-born Daniel was educated at Wells Cathedral School and the Royal College of Music, where he studied with John Byrne, John Barstow, Yonty Solomon and Andrew Ball. He graduated with First Class Honors, a Postgraduate Diploma with Distinction, and the Hopkinson Gold Medal.
Following a two year Junior Fellowship at the RCM, he has gone on to establish himself as a solo recitalist, chamber musician, accompanist and teacher. He has performed widely across the UK, Europe, USA, Ireland, Central America, Scandinavia and Australia; performing at venues including Wigmore Hall, The Southbank Centre, National Concert Hall in Dublin, Hochschule der Kunste in Berlin, and the University of Iowa. He has broadcast on BBC television, Classic FM, and live on BBC Radio 3.
In addition to his busy freelance career, he currently holds teaching posts at Wycombe Abbey School and the RCM Junior Department, and manages his own music agency.

Daniel Grafton Hill IV[1][2] (born 3 June 1954) is a Canadian pop singer and songwriter. He had two major international hits with his songs "Sometimes When We Touch" and "Can't We Try", a duet with Vonda Shepard, as well as a number of other charting singles in Canada and the United States. He also established himself as a songwriter who produced hit songs for artists such as George Benson and Celine Dion.
Early life
Hill was born in Toronto, the son of social scientist and public servant Daniel G. Hill and social activist Donna Mae Hill (née Bender, 1928–2018[3]), and older brother of the author Lawrence Hill and the late novelist Karen Hill.
