AAS: When did you think you first became interested in art?

CF: I cannot draw a straight line with a ruler and have absolutely no talent for making art. I did take an art appreciation course in college and learned to tell a Cézanne from a Renoir and a Monet from a Manet. My mother took college students to Europe during the 50’s and 60’s, and I went on one of these two-month trips in 1953. During my army service I traveled extensively and went to quite a few museums then.
But I guess it wasn’t really until I became an adult. Around 1981, I became a trustee at the Arkansas Arts Center, now the AMFA. I had been a board member of the Arkansas Symphony before that. I’ve always liked symphony music and hearing it live. I used to go to the symphony where there were more people in the orchestra than in the audience. Anyway, due to the guidance of Townsend Wolfe, director, and Bob Hickman, an active board member, I became very interested in the AAC and its mission. Background[]

Before trying out for American Idol, Curtis was a dedicated gospel singer who previously auditioned for American Idol during Season 4 and Season 11, but was cut during both seasons. He was also in the same group with Amber Holcomb, Shannon Magrane, and Joshua Ledet during the Season 11 Las Vegas Rounds.

Curtis tried out for Season 12, in Chicago, Illinois. He sang "God Is Able" and past his audition to move on to Hollywood Rounds. During the Hollywood rounds, he sang "I Need You Know", "The Lazy Song", and "Jar of Hearts" which also progressed him to the next round. During Las Vegas Rounds, he sang "Superstar" and was granted a spot by the judges in the Top 20.
