Albert Williams

Albert Williams was a British painter known for his depictions of variegated flower arrangements. He employed a unique process of painting individual fresh flowers picked from his garden, using these studies to compose more elaborate arrangements on larger canvases. Williams was notably influenced by Dutch 17th-century flower painters. Born on March 20, 1922 in Sussex, England, Williams learned painting from his father and grandfather and went on to study figure and portrait painting under Louis Ginnett and at the Brighton College of Art. Over the course of his life, Williams exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Watercolour Society, and the Royal Society of British Artists. He died in 2010 in Brighton, England.

Artist Albert Williams

"Albert Williams was born in Sussex on 20th March 1922. Both his father and grandfather were artists and, having studied painting with them, Albert Williams attended art schools in London and Paris. He studied figure and portrait painting under the late Louis Ginnett as well as landscape and water-colour painting under the late Charles Knight. Albert Williams has had his works exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of Oil Painters, the Royal Water-colour Society, the Royal Society of British Artists, the Paris Salon, the Edinburgh Festival and at numerous other prestigious galleries in London and around the country. He has specialised in floral painting for many years, mostly working in oil. At all times he takes his compositions directly from nature, each flower being a portrait of an individual bloom that is incorporated into the final composition. Influenced in the early years by the Dutch 17th century school of flower painting and by the botanical draughtsmanship of Gerard Van Spændonck, Albert Williams soon discarded the tight classical style

The day I discovered Albert William’s paintings my life was enriched. Dramatic I know but every day I look at the prints and one original that I have collected and take great pleasure and enjoyment from their stunning beauty.

Several years ago, in a local charity shop, I saw two little prints and thought how pretty they were. I had no idea who had painted the roses but handed over my £3 for the two . I always research my rosy purchases, that is for me half the fun of buying them, so later that day found me at the computer typing in the name of Albert Williams.

When I discovered all the beautiful pictures of roses he had painted I was near to tears. They were not any rose pictures; they were beautiful. Painted in oils in a rainbow of colours they portrayed the lovely old roses I adore. I was also near to tears about a month ago when I managed to find and purchase my first original. It will not be the last.

Sadly, I discovered that he had died in 2010 in his late eighties. He painted virtually every day until the day he died and what a legacy he has left.
