Janet Fish (born May 18, 1938) is a contemporary American realist artist. Through oil painting, lithography, and screenprinting, she explores the interaction of light with everyday objects in the still life genre. Many of her paintings include elements of transparency (plastic wrap, water), reflected light,^[1] and multiple overlapping patterns depicted in bold, high color values. She has been credited with revitalizing the still life genre.

Early life and education

Janet Isobel Fish^[2] was born on (1938-05-18) May 18, 1938 (age 86) in Boston, Massachusetts,^[3] and was raised in Bermuda, where her family moved when she was ten years old.^[3] From a young age, she was surrounded by many artistic influences. Her father was professor of art history Peter Stuyvesant Fish and her mother was sculptor and potter Florence Whistler Voorhees.^[4] Her sister, Alida, is a photographer.^[5] Her grandfather, whose studio was in Bermuda, was American Impressionist painter Clark Voorhees.^&

Throughout her over fifty-year career, Janet Fish has committed herself to the exploration of color and light in her paintings, pastels, and watercolors. Born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1938, Fish received her BA from Smith College in 1960 and her MFA from Yale University in 1963. At Yale, her fellow students included Chuck Close, Nancy Graves, Robert Mangold, Sylvia Plimack Mangold, and Richard Serra, a tight-knit group who formed an intense, ambitious, competitive group that motivated one another to develop and defend their work. There, Fish was taught Abstract Expressionism, the predominant painting style of the time. However, she found it difficult to connect with the art form and struggled to find meaning in her large gestural paintings. Encouraged by Alex Katz, her teacher during her summer at The Skowhegan School and Painting & Sculpture, Fish began painting landscapes, proving to be a breakthrough in her artistic practice. Following her graduation from Yale, Fish moved to New York City.

Janet Fish is a contemporary realist painter and printmaker who was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1938, and was raised on the island of Bermuda. Her grandfather, Clark Voorhees, was an American Impressionist painter who inspired Janet. Her father was an art history teacher, and her mother, Florence Whistler Fish, a sculptor and potter. Janet went to Skowhegan Summer School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine, and studied sculpture and printmaking at Smith College in Massachusetts, graduating from Smith in 1960. She then went on to Yale University School of Art and Architecture in Connecticut, where she received her B.F.A. (Bachelor of Fine Arts) and M.F.A. (Master of Fine Arts) degrees in 1963. (She was one of the first women artists to receive her M.F.A from Yale.) At Yale some of her classmates included Rackstraw Downes, Chuck Close, Nancy Graves and Brice Marden.
