Mari Elka Pangestu
Mari Pangestu, a professor of international economics at University of Indonesia and Board Member of CSIS, Jakarta, joined the Peterson Institute for International Economics as a distinguished fellow in October 2023.
She has served most recently as the Managing Director of Development Policy Partnerships at the World Bank (March 2020-2023) and was Indonesia’s Minister of Trade from 2004 to 2011 and Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy from 2011 to 2014. As Minister of Trade she oversaw Indonesia’s negotiations at the multilateral level (Doha Round and WTO), regional level (ASEAN and the East Asia Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership) and bilateral negotiations (amongst others Japan, EU, Australia and Korea). As Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy she spearheaded the creative economy framework in Indonesia. For her government service she was awarded the Mahaputra Award (Highest Order for Public Service awarded by the President of Republic Indonesia) in 2013.

Mari Pangestu Keynote Speaker
Mari Pangestu is a highly regarded Indonesian economist and former World Bank Managing Director of Development Policy and Partnerships.
With over 30 years of experience in academia, second track processes and international organisations, Mari has also held various high-level government positions. She served as Indonesia’s Minster of Trade from 2004 to 2011 and as Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy from 2011 to 2014.
At the time, Mari Pangestu was the first female Indonesian of Chinese descent to hold a cabinet position in Indonesia. In 2012, Mari was nominated for the position of Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, but the role eventually fell to Roberto Azevêdo.
Pangestu was Senior Fellow at the Columbia School of International and Public Affairs, as well as Professor of International Economics at the University of Indonesia, adjunct professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy and Crawford School of Public Policy at Australian National University.

Mari Pangestu was the World Bank Managing Director of Development Policy and Partnerships. In this role, which she assumed on March 1, 2020, Ms. Pangestu provides leadership and oversees the research and data group of the World Bank (DEC), the work program of the World Bank’s Global Practice Groups, and the External and Corporate Relations function.
Ms. Pangestu joins the Bank with exceptional policy and management expertise, having served as Indonesia’s Minister of Trade from 2004 to 2011 and as Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy from 2011 to 2014.
She has had vast experience of over 30 years in academia, second track processes, international organizations and government working in areas related to international trade, investment and development in multilateral, regional and national settings.
